Outdoor and environmental educators across New York State enrich our lives by connecting children to the wonders of nature exploration, providing valuable professional development to teachers about how to use the outdoors as a classroom, and inspiring us all to do our part to take care of the earth. COVID-19 has hit our community hard and it is now our turn to take care of the tremendously talented and dedicated educators who have lost income.
Many environmental education positions are seasonal, part-time, or considered “non-essential” which made them some of the first to get cut during the economic hardship we are facing. New York State Outdoor Education Association (NYSOEA) and the Environmental Education Advisory Council (EEAC), both 501c(3) nonprofit organizations, have joined together to create this fundraiser to give much needed grants to educators who are struggling to make ends meet.
How you can help:
Donate, if you can, using the button at the top of this page.
If you are in need, please don’t hesitate to apply for funds- you can find the application at the top of this page.
Share! Whether you are donating or you are in need, you have a network of folks who can help with this effort. Please share this webpage as widely as you can. We are implementing an intense outreach effort but we need your help!
How the funding works: If you are an environmental or outdoor educator in New York State and you’ve lost your job or lost a significant portion of your income due to COVID-19, you can apply for funds.
We hope to be able to give each applicant a grant but if we need to make tough choices, we will be prioritizing people who have indicated they are not eligible for unemployment or stimulus check money.
PayPal is the easiest, safest way for us to distribute the grant to applicants. If you are applying, please set up a PayPal account. If you don’t have one, let us know and we’ll try to work something else out.
Our goal is to give 100 applicants a $500 grant from the fund. We will continue to raise money beyond our initial goal.
A COVID-19 Fundraiser Committee formed from members of both NYSOEA and EEAC boards will meet every other week to go through applications and distribute funds via PayPal. This is the easiest way for us to get money out to applicants quickly. If you’re applying, please try to set up a PayPal account.
No one from the committee or anyone in their households will be eligible to receive a grant.
Offering more than just funding: Regardless of funding, all applicants will receive a free 1-year membership to NYSOEA and EEAC to help build their professional networks.
