Teacher Ecology Worshop

Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA)
offering FREE model solar car training workshop to teachers, community
educators, and youth club leaders! On Tuesday, October 7, 4:00
7:00 p.m. at the Somers Middle School in Somers, NY come learn about solar
energy and the Junior Solar Sprint Program. Practice building a mini solar
car! Gain training in leading your students through a highly motivating,
unique learning experience. Your young engineers will deepen their understanding
about solar energy, math, physical science, and craftsmanship. This project
is appropriate for students in grades 5-8 and is a great opportunity for
a class, after school, home school, or youth group! Teams can enter their
cars in local design and race competitions with top winners invited to
an annual Northeast championship! To register (required) visit the NESEA

Stony Kill Farm Summer Day Camp
July 8 - August 22
Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center is still taking
registrations for its popular "Summer Explorers" Nature Day
Camp for
children 5 -10 years old. Summer Explorers sessions run from Tuesday
through Friday each week, beginning July 8 and ending August 22. Summer
Explorers is fun and hands-on, giving children a chance to explore the
natural world and learn where their food comes from by participating in
outdoor activities. Activities led by trained environmental educators
include grinding corn, planting and tending a pizza garden, getting to
know the farm animals, sweepnetting the meadow for insects, sampling
pond life, and searching for signs of wildlife in the forest. Snacks
are provided each day, and special campfire programs are held each month
to bring campers and their parents from different sessions together.
Summer Explorers in July is for children entering grades 1 or 2
next fall. August sessions are for children entering grades 3-5. The
cost per session is $55/child, $40 for members of the Stony Kill
Foundation, a not-for-profit citizen's group that supports Stony Kill's
educational activities. The$40 rate is also offered to those registering

Stony Kill Farm. Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center is
owned and operated by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation,
and is located in Wappingers Falls, on state route 9D, about 2 miles
north of the Beacon-Newburgh bridge (I-84).
Up Close with Bats!
Nine species of bats inhabit New York State. These mosquito-eating
mammals are now in trouble. This program will focus on the recent
outbreak of white-nose disease, as well as the threats of loss of summer
habitat due to development, and fatalities due to wind turbines.
Come to the NYSDEC Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center on
Saturday, June 7 at 6:00 PM to find out more about these amazing,
important creatures and what you can do to help them. We'll meet at the
Learning Center for an indoor slide presentation by Al Hicks, a DEC
Wildlife Biologist, followed by a walk to view the capture and release
of live bats using mist netting. Please register for this program by
calling the office at Stony Kill Farm at 845-831-8780, ext 300. Seating
is limited to the first 25 people.
In addition, we hope to monitor some summer nesting sites of bats at
Stony Kill and welcome involvement of interested individuals. For more

36 Years of Wetland Stewardship
Join Environmental Concern and the Adirondack Park Agency for WOW! The
Wonders of Wetlands. This one-day hands-on workshop will introduce you
to wetlands WOW! introduces you to basic wetland ecology, including soil,
water, and plants, as well as wetland functions and values. WOW! contains
fun and interactive K-12 activities in lesson plan format. WOW! has been
called, "the most comprehensive introduction to wetland issues and
definitions" by NAAEE and is a recommended resource by NSTA.

nature. Rogers Center has many programs in July for you to enjoy. Why
not learn about fireflies or herons? Learn to paddle a canoe or kayak.
Hike with a forester or sing around the campfire. There is lots of fun
for everyone.

Bogs are unique places of carnivorous plants, rare wildflowers and
sphagnum moss. On this trip, we will explore the wonders of Jam Pond and
learn what makes a bog what it is. We will see the many interesting
adaptations needed to survive in a bog environment and see pitcher
plants, sundews and bog rosemary. Please call to register and for

Long Pond is a 117-acre pond in the 3,254-acre Long Pond State Forest
in
the town of Smithville. The land also includes a Bird Conservation Area
with habitat for Henslow*s, grasshopper, and savannah sparrows, eastern
meadowlarks and bobolinks. Join us for a leisurely paddle to explore the
calm waters and shoreline. Registration is required. $5.00
non-refundable fee per paddler using our equipment. Meet in the Rogers
Center main parking lot.

10:00 AM HERONS AND KINGFISHERS
Herons and kingfishers are masters of fish spearing in our area. The
heron stands and waits, while the kingfisher perches and dives. Both
great blue and green herons and kingfishers are readily seen at Rogers
Center. Learn about their adaptations and strategies for survival, and
join us for a walk to see some in action.
AUGUST ACTIVITIES AT ROGERS

Have you looked up at the night sky and its abundance of stars and
wondered how to find constellations and where to look for shooting
stars? Join us for a tour of the night sky. David Terrazas of the
Central New York Astronomy Club will have some large telescopes for

Explore Sherburne*s Rexford Falls and learn about gorge geology and

Rogers Center is operated by the NYS Department of Environmental
Conservation. The not-for-profit Friends of Rogers, Inc. helps support
the Center's programs and special events. Rogers Center is located one
mile west of Sherburne on Route 80. It is 45 minutes south of Utica
via Route 12, one hour north of Binghamton via Route 12, and 75 minutes
southeast of Syracuse via Routes 20 east and 12 south. The Visitor
Center and grounds are open year round to the public, and admission is

Map Adventures
Orienteering is a map-reading sport. It's universally engaging and
fun - an event that can incorporate any objective or topic with any age
group in any setting. It is that adaptable! Ed Hicks has developed a
wealth of creative programs for staff training and group members that
enhance lifetime skills, teamwork, and self-confidence, all within the
framework of Map Adventures that play out like a treasure hunt.
